New York City Marathon 2023

The Marathon

One of the biggest Marathon in the world the New York City Marathon hosted 51,402 total finishers. This Marathon holds immense importance as it transcends mere athletic competition but is a symbol for human determination.

Route

The 26.2 Mile race starts in Staten Island, from there you run through Brooklyn. The 13.1 mile mark is by Greenport and from there you run over to Manhattan where you run all the way to The Bronx. From the Bronx you go back down to Manhattan where the race comes to an end at Central Park. 

Tamirat Tola

Coming in first place in the overall race was Tamirat Tola. A 32 year old Ethiopian who has competed in multiple races around the world and won the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He finished the New York City Marathon with a time of 2:04:58. 

Hallen Obiri 

Coming in first place for the women's race was hallen Obiri. A 33 year old Kenyan Runner who won world titles in indoor and outdoor track and is a two time Olympic silver medalist in the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She finished the New York City Marathon with a time of 2:27:29.

Marcel Hug

A Paralympian athlete from Switzerland, Marcel Hug who has acquired the nickname "The Silver Bullet". At the age of 37 years Marcel won four gold medals total at the Tokyo Paralympics and much more in previous Paralympic games. He won the wheelchair race at New York City Marathon with a time of 1:25:29. 

Catherine Debrunner

Another Paralympian from Switzerland Catherine Debrunner won the 2019 World Paralympic championships. At the age of 28 years old Catherine won the women's wheelchair race at the New York City Marathon with a time of 1:39:32. 


Kayleigh Williamson

One of the most inspiring athletes is Kayleigh Williamson. At the age of 33 Kayleigh made history as one of the first women with Down syndrome to complete the New York City Marathon. She ran alongside her mom Sandy Williamson with the time of 10 hours and 9 minuets. An Austin, Texas native she isn't new to running marathons has she completed the Austin, Boston and 20 other half marathons. (Fun Fact: I actually met her at my job) 

What's Next? 

Race season is now happening as the New York City marathons marks the beginning of what people call "Race Season". Many races around the country will be happening during this 4-5 month stretch. Go out, lace your shoes and go race!
